I previously owned the Venture Cx and the display cracked due to my carelessness in the airline luggage. I upgraded to the new Garmin Legend HCx with the high sensitivity receiver and this unit significantly outperforms the older units. The new receiver fixes your location much faster and provides much better signal coverage. I noticed this as soon as I turned the Legend HCx on, as I was able to get a fix inside my house.

Adding maps to the Legend HCx is easier than ever thanks to the device's microSD card slot, which accepts cards preloaded with MapSource data for your land and sea excursions. Just insert a MapSource card with detailed street maps, and the Garmin Legend HCx will provide turn-by-turn directions to your destination. Plus, the card slot is located inside the waterproof battery compartment, so you needn't worry about it getting wet.
Besides appreciating its small size, users will also be happy with the Legend HCx's unique button layout, with five buttons located on either side of the unit. The benefits of this design are twofold: First, the Legend HCx is a breeze to operate with just one hand, and, second, with the buttons on both sides of the unit, the bulk of the front is dedicated to the 256-color, sunlight-readable TFT display. Garmin Etrex Legend Hcx is Great little GPS receiver
I was very pleased with the Garmin Legend HCx. I am the owner of a Legend Cx (previous model) and bought this as a gift, and the "H" (for High Sensitivity) is a real improvement. I have found using the Cx model that often when driving, if the unit is near the center of the car and away from dashboard / windows, it will lose satellite reception, even while driving in wide open areas (experienced this in two different car models). THIS IS NOT THE CASE WITH THE HCx. If you are looking for a GPS receiver for hiking, rowing and general navigation while traveling, like I was, I recommend this model.

"This is my second eTrex Legend. I decided to up grade and this one is much faster in locating my position. It can even find the satellite while indoors which my older modal could not. I did have a few problems getting my "City Navigator" software to work on this device. Before I could add a second GPS I had to download an upgrade to Mapsource at [...]. I'm very computer illiterate and as usual I ran into problems. I completed the download (which I think I did wrong)and every time I tried to open Mapsource my computer would freeze up. I called the Garmin 800 number and I can say this was the absolute best technical support experience of my life. Michael K helped me and was extremely patient. We got my software updated and working smoothly. He even helped get my maps loaded on the GPS. I can't say enough about their Tech Support."

However, the newer chip used in the latest purchase boots up faster, picks up signals faster, and is much more sensitive. Tree foilage has not affected signal receival unlike the older model.
